Do You Remember?

The older I get, the more I love to reflect on the people and events of my past.  I wonder if you have some of the same memories I have?

I‘ve always loved fall.  I love the colors and the smells and the cool nights.  Do you remember how fun it was to play in the fall leaves?

Me as a little girl raking the leaves at our home in Bakersfield, California

Growing up, we didn’t have the sophisticated toys that kids have today and so we spent a lot of time playing with simple things.  I remember how much I loved it when the leaves began to fall. We would spend hours raking the leaves into huge piles and jumping into the piles.

I also remember loving the sound of the leaves as they crunched under my shoes.  But even more than that, I loved the way the leaves crunched as my mom walked on them in her high heels and I could hardly wait until for the day I too would wear high heels.

Do you have childhood memories of playing in the fall leaves?

  1. Autumn is my favorite season. I've always loved the beautiful colors and the coolness after summer's heat. I remember coming home from school to my mother raking and burning leaves. I don't know why they burned them but I grew up thinking of that fragrance as one for fall — and I still love it. You look adorable in your little red cowboy hat. I don't know what I thought happened to leaves in California but it never occurred to me that they fell and had to be raked! I must need a few more geography lessons.

  2. We had a couple trees but I don't remember raking. Maybe my dad did it and I didn't pay attention. When my girls were little, we had only one tree with leaves but MANY pine trees, so we were constantly raking up pine straw and picking up pine cones. I have a picture of my girls lying in a mound of straw; they were tossing straw in the air and covering themselves. Sweet picture but it just makes me itch.

  3. I love fall so much too Nancy! They burn the fields here where I live now in the fall and so we always smell that in the fall and I too associate it will fall. Now I think a lot of people mulch their leaves….times are a changing.
